DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office Animal Control Officer
Erika Hedge brings extensive experience in animal welfare, investigations, and community service to her role with the Sheriff’s Office.
From 2010 to 2017, Erika served as an Animal Control Officer with Fort Wayne Animal Care and Control, where she investigated large-scale cases of neglect, hoarding, and animal fighting. She worked closely with the Fort Wayne Police Department and the Allen County Sheriff’s Office, preparing cases for court and pursuing charges against animal cruelty offenders. During her time there, Erika also developed standardized intake and evidence collection procedures for animal victims.
Erika is a Registered Veterinary Technologist and holds a Bachelor of Science in Veterinary Technology from Purdue University. She has completed specialized training in animal cruelty investigations, ASPCA field investigations, crime scene work, and crime scene photography, and she maintains certifications in infant, child, and adult CPR and AED.
In addition to her law enforcement and veterinary background, Erika has worked in private veterinary practices, served as a Community Cat Coordinator for Humane Fort Wayne, and opened her home as a foster parent for Allen County DCS. Her dedication to both animals and people makes her a valuable resource to the community and an important member of the Sheriff’s Office team.
