Division Mission
The K-9 Division of the DeKalb County Sheriff's Office consists of highly trained canine teams specializing in narcotics detection, tracking, and patrol functions. Our K-9 units are invaluable assets in maintaining public safety and assisting with criminal investigations.
Each K-9 team undergoes extensive training and certification to ensure the highest standards of performance. Our handlers and their canine partners form a unique bond that enhances law enforcement capabilities throughout the county.
K-9 Capabilities
- •Narcotics detection (marijuana, cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine)
- •Tracking suspects and missing persons
- •Article searches and evidence recovery
- •Building searches and area clearance
- •Suspect apprehension and patrol support
- •Public demonstrations and community education
Training & Standards
- •National Police Canine Association (NPCA) certified
- •Minimum 400 hours initial training per team
- •Monthly in-service training and recertification
- •Annual certification renewal
- •Ongoing handler development programs
- •Regular health monitoring and veterinary care
Community Programs
Our K-9 teams are active members of the community, participating in educational programs and demonstrations throughout DeKalb County.
